Just heard that the HKUST stand for The HongKong University of Stress and Tension. I think maybe more negative we can put it as The HongKong University of Suffer and Torture. HeHe. But I heard a different explanation tonight, which is more positive, The HongKong University of Struggle and Tear. Maybe the author of this expression do not think this way, but what I got from this expression is something about research life. Research life is hard, especially for PhD student. It involves stress, tension, difficulties, lonelyness, disappointment, sadness... but also there are joyful things. One need to even tear himself apart to get an idea, an proposal and a paper finally, but he also gets happyness, interests, and the feeling of being successful. So after all, you will got your tears. It is not for all the sadness, difficulties and lonelyness experienced in this long long process. It is for the feeling of doing something you like, you really care about. It is the tear for the success you will get. So face it actively and positively, people will get what they want.

 

Research is about search. Search for the trueth under phenomenons, if you can not find it at the first glance, then it is a good topic for re-search. Re-search it, once, twice... finally one will come up with some creative, original ideas and finally one will make contributions to the society, to your school, to your advisor and for yourself.
